Had a nice note from Bruce Sharpe regarding an earlier post on Levelator and its java-based audio levels adjustments machine.

Hi,

Sorry to hear you didn't get the results you wanted from The Levelator. We're working on a new version which (among other things) greatly improves the "breathing" issue that you mention.

Would you be able to provide me with the audio file you used, pre-Levelator and pre-MP3 encoding? I can test it and see if the new version is indeed better. Samples like this have been a great help in improving the algorithm.

With the skeptical help of her sister Hilda, Connie clandestinely meets Mellors on her last night near Wragby before leaving for a Venice holiday.

"It's the nicest woman's arse as is," is what Connie remembers as Clifford opines on the nature of spirit vs. guts. "It's the nicest woman's arse as is."

Great to be back. Lots of travel & freelance work lately, and a neighbor moves in, moves out, and another neighbor move in and continues construction across the hall. The new neighbor loves loud music. Hmmm.

Experimented with Levelator - free a Windows / Mac 10.4 compression agent. You'll hear the 'breathing' as the program adjusts levels during longer silences. Further experimented recording for the first time on the Dell PC using the similarly free and wonderful cross-platform Audacity, which is why the Levelator test became an option since overall levels changed throughout the recording as the proper audio settings were located. From beginning to end, a net reduction of 10 db in input level. That's a lot. The 'breathing' is less noticable toward the end.

Have begun to transfer all the audio files for this work to Blip.tv. Check it out. Free hosting and automated cross-posting for all your multi-media needs.

Banned Books Week::September 23-30, 2006

Sorry to interrupt your regularly-scheduled podcast with this, but it seems too on point not to mention Banned Books Week, given the nature of this particular ditigal space.

The American Library Association fights the good fight against censorship. Sometimes, without a fight, books like "Lady Chatterly's Lover" might never have been published in the United States.

From their web site:

More than a book a day faces expulsion from free and open public access in U.S. schools and libraries every year. There have been more than 8,700 attempts since the American Library Association (ALA) began electronically compiling and publishing information on book challenges in 1990.

Extraordinary. Who knew?

Is this not a frightening statistic? Horrifying that there is one person in this day and age who believes censorship is a valid response to things one does not like.

For shame. For shame.

Celebrate banned books? Hardly.

Shout it from the rooftops: liberty or death.

An esteemed subscriber left a comment saying that Chapter 1 wasn't accessible. Oh dear.

After a bit of research it seems our listings at Podcast Alley, Podnova and Podcast Pickle don't include it.

Kindly excuse the repost, but it seems important for folks to be able to get all the chapters from whatever source they wish to use to listen to this fine book.

A neighbor is making repairs to his house today so I shan't be able to record Chapter 10 until tomorrow.

In further news, you'll note that UAA Audio Books has choosen to support the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive to which we plan to donate a license to this work when it is complete.
